Southern New Hampshire Rehabilitation & Healthcare followed as the county’s second-largest nursing home at 290 beds, while Ridgewood Center, Genesis Healthcare, ranked third with 150 beds.

According to U.S. Census Bureau estimates, America’s population of older adults is steadily increasing as the younger population shrinks. Between 2020 and 2024, the population of residents age 65 and up grew by 13%, while those under 18 declined by 1.7%. Over the past 100 years, the nation’s older adult group has grown dramatically—from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million by 2024. That demographic surge has shaped long-term care needs.

A 2021 study estimates nearly half of adults age 65 and older—28 million people—will need long-term services. The analysis forecasts that over a third of them could eventually require care in nursing facilities.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
