Join the Manchester City Library and the New Hampshire Audubon for a program series on Peregrine Falcons! This All-Ages program is ideal for anyone interested in falcons, and Manchester's own nesting pair. Join via Zoom on Tuesdays from 7:00-8:00 PM, March 1 & 15, April 19, May 17, and June 21!

This five-part virtual series is designed to engage, excite, and invite audience members into the diverse and fascinating world of Peregrine Falcons. Each hour-long presentation will cover a range of topics from raptor biology and general birding tips to courtship displays, chick development, banding, fledging, and more!

Presentations will be monthly beginning in March and running through June. With cameras livestreaming a nesting site in Manchester, program participants can independently monitor a pair of Peregrines from dusk to dawn throughout the duration of the program!

Peregrine Falcons across North America were decimated by DDT, an environmental contaminant that impacted egg hatchability, beginning in the 1940s. By the 1970s these raptors were rarely seen and no longer breeding in New England and were placed on state and federal endangered species lists. Recovery programs in NH began in the mid-1970s. Since the mid-1980s NH Audubon has coordinated NH restoration efforts and participated in regional falcon conservation initiatives. Through active monitoring and management, NH Audubon has played a pivotal role in increasing the Peregrine Falcon population in the state from one breeding pair in 1981 to 25 pairs in 2018. This project includes further monitoring and management to ensure the population's full recovery in New Hampshire.

Banding, Fledging, Flying

This final program recaps the banding procedure of the resident falcon chicks while discussing the integral role longitudinal wildlife monitoring plays in research and conservation. From butterflies to bald eagles, metal bands and digital tags allow us to track populations and recognize patterns over the lifespan of various bird species.

This webinar will conclude with ample time for questions and discussion and will present opportunities for interested folks to get involved in the amazing world of citizen science!
