On Thursday, September 15, 2022 at 2:15 p.m.. at the James A. Tuttle Library, our Book Club will discuss Jon Krakauer’s , Into the Wild
Into the Wild has haunted me since I read it more than twenty years ago. In April 1992 a recent college grad, Christopher McCandless, trekked into Alaska’s Denali National Park, perhaps inspired by Jack London’s tales of the Alaska wilderness . Whatever his motivation, four months later McCandless, was found dead inside an abandoned school bus which hunters had previously used for shelter. In a journal McCandless recorded his efforts to sustain himself through foraging and hunting. Whether McCandless’ ordeal eventually resulted in some form of enlightenment is up to the reader to determine.
1. How selfish an individual was Christopher McCandless, did he lack the necessary humility for going into the Alaska wilderness?
2. How would you describe McCandless’s relationship with his parents?
3. Krakauer stated that risk-taking is a rite of passage. Do you agree?
4. What did you most like, and most dislike, about this book.
Free copies of the book will be available at the Library. For further information please email Steve Ullman at stephenhullman@gmail. We warmly welcome newcomers to our book lovers’ group.
