From Guns to Gramophones: Civil War and the Technology that Shaped America

U.S. Industrial Alcohol, owner of the Boston molasses facility featured in Dark Tide, distilled the liquid into industrial alcohol for use in the manufacture of explosives. At tonight’s program, Carrie Brown explores weapons technologies going back to the Civil War. New machinery and methods for producing guns with interchangeable parts enabled the North to produce over a million rifles, along with tens of thousands of pistols and carbines. After the war, with the system of mass production perfected, new factory technology and print media fueled the development of mass consumerism. Find out about the surprising role of Vermont and New Hampshire in producing industrial technology that won the war and changed American life. This event is co-sponsored by New Hampshire Humanities.
