Antrim Eclectic Book Club will meet again, Thursday, Dec. 15th @2:15pm to discuss, "A Gentleman in Moscow" by Towles

Antrim Eclectic Book Club

Steve Ullman, Coordinator

Before Book Club members plunge into their annual,  winter hibernation, we will be reading one more book, A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles,   Not only has this novel sold more than two million copies, it has inspired an entire Showtime series.

Here’s the plot.  In 1922, a Soviet court sentences Rostov, a  work-shy, and thoroughly  shameless nobleman, to a life term to be served in servants’ quarters within the Metropol, a historic Moscow hotel. The human relationships and spiritual insights which Rostov develops during his thirty-two  years of “riches-to-rags” imprisonment form the core of this compelling bestseller.

Please join us at the James A. Tuttle Library between 2:15 and 3:15 p.m. on Thursday, December 15th.  We warmly welcome all newcomers.  For further information, please email Steve Ullman at

Possible discussion questions:

How would you describe the Count’s relationships with Sofia, Marina, Anna, and Ann?  How do these relationships differ from his relationships with the male characters?

Is this book still relevant in the post-Soviet Union era?

What lessons does the Count learn during his residence in the Metropol?

What did you think of the ending?  The Count’s providing the Americans with sensitive Council of Ministers information?  His reunion with Anna?
